Norman Hummerstone

We are sad to report the death of Norman Hummerstone MBE FRIN at the age of 97.

After service as a rifleman during WWII, he became a chartered surveyor and passionate sailor.

Norman joined the Little Ship Club in 1964 and became its first elected Commodore in 1974. He was the Club's Yachtmaster Ocean instructor and an avid fan of astro - and continued to instruct until the end. He was also a regular winner of the Club's 'Old Seadog Trophy' - for a cruise where the average age of the crew is the highest (typically almost 80). And in 2012 the Club, in recognition of Norman's outstanding contribution to the teaching of seamanship and navigation, introduced the 'Norman Hummerstone Trophy', to be awarded each year to a skipper or watchkeeper who had completed a passage of not less than 2,000 miles; special consideration would be given if astro-navigation had been used in all or part of the journey. The trophy is a 1940's Hughes sextant - which is also used by the Club to teach astro-navigation.

He was presented with the RYA 'Lifetime Achievement Award' in 2007 for services to navigation. He was also the organiser of the annual Little Ship Club/Royal Naval Sailing Association pilgrimage to Calais over the late May Bank Holiday weekend; he led last year's event and was about to have done so again this year.

Norman was also Chairman and Hon Sec of the Queen Victoria's Rifles Association, with its HQ just off Oxford Street in London.

He joined the Institute in 1981 and was elected into Fellowship in 1997. And he was awarded the MBE in 2001 for his services to the community.

For many years and until recently, Norman sailed his yacht 'Barbary Heron' from her home berth in Burnham-on-Crouch, where he was a member of the Narrow Seas Club. He actively took part in our Fly/Sail events and, well in his 90s, was still wonderful company and great fun to be with; we will miss him greatly.

Norman's funeral will take place at 1200 on Wednesday 16 May at Breakspear Crematorium, Breakspear Road, Ruislip, HA4 7SJ. Further details are at the link below . .
