Big is beautiful, flying the large jets

The HANG Spring meeting will be held on Wed 11 Apr 2018 from 11am to 4pm and will again be at The Valdoe, Goodwood, Chichester PO18 0PJ just north of the airfield. Friends of members and other interested people are welcome but please remember the need for prior booking (see below).

HANG recently adopted a change in the timing of these meetings and this has proved popular. Doors will now open at 1100 for coffee and the first talk will start at 1130. Lunch will be at 1230. The second talk will be at 1330 and tea and biscuits will be served at 1400. The third talk will be from 1430 to 1530. There will be time for questions after the talks with the chance of leaving around 1600 to avoid rush hour traffic.

The topic will be ‘Big is Beautiful – Flying the Large Jets’.

Jack Froelich will talk first about flying the KC135 tanker for the USAF. Jack spoke to HANG a year ago on flying the Caribou in the Vietnam war and this is a return following popular demand. He flew for the USAF 1966 – 1973; he flew on military operations worldwide in the C-7A Caribou (Vietnam) and KC-135 Tanker and experienced the USAF Survival and Jungle Survival Schools.

Arthur Creighton will follow by talking about the Voyager (Airbus A330) which will replace the air-to-air refuelling capability of the RAF’s Tri-Stars. Arthur flew in a Voyager when it refuelled Typhoons from101 squadron. He took a camera along and has edited the clips into a short video.

Lastly, John Cairns will talk about the slow, low and discrete flying of anti-submarine warfare. John spent 40 years in the RAF and will talk about his experience in the Shackleton and Nimrod. He will end with a few words on the Boeing P8-A Maritime Patrol Aircraft which the RAF will buy.
