  • 16/11/2017 18:00:00 to 16/11/2017 20:00:00
  • Royal Thames Yacht Club, 60 Knightsbridge, London, SW1X 7LF

How to Read Water by Tristan Gooley will be the subject of the talk at the RIN SCG and RTYC Joint Autumn meeting.

Natural Navigation:
Natural navigation experts at sea learn to read the motion of the water in the way a land navigator would read a map. Every ripple, wave and swell contains detailed information about what the wind is doing, what it has been doing and therefore what direction a sailor is heading. These and other natural navigation techniques, used by Tristan Gooley, on his recent short-handed voyage from Scotland to the Arctic Circle to confirm some of the methods available to the Vikings will be covered in this fascinating talk on How to Read Water.

Tristan Gooley:
Tristan Gooley is a natural navigator and author. He has led expeditions in five continents, climbed mountains in Europe, Africa and Asia, sailed small boats across oceans and piloted small aircraft to Africa and the Arctic.Tristan is the only living person to have both flown solo and sailed single-handed across the Atlantic and is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation and the Royal Geographical Society. He is Vice Chairman of the UK's largest independent travel company, Trailfinders. He set up his natural navigation school in 2008 and is the author of award-winning and bestselling books including The Natural Navigator (2010), The Walker's Guide to Outdoor Clues & Signs (2014) and How to Read Water (2016), three of the world’s only books covering natural navigation.
