Indian GPS overlay progress
3rd October 2008 |
The Indian government has given the go-ahead for Gagan - the country's satellite-based navigation overlay for air traffic management. The name 'Gagan' is Sanskrit for 'Sky'.
The technology demonstration phase of Gagan has been completed and the overlay is expected to become operational in 2011.
India's G-Sat-4 technology demonstrator communications satellite will carry the Gagan navigation payload - it is due to be launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle by the end of 2009. ISRO is also planning to launch 2 more navigation payloads on geostationary satellites.
Gagan will be run jointly by ISRO and the Airports Authority of India. It will be fully interoperable with the the US WAAS, European EGNOS and Japan's MTSAT space-based augmentation systems.
