The Space Special Interest Group has a long history - Formerly the United Kingdom Civil Satnav Group, it became the Satellite Navigation Users' Group in 1988 to provide a focal point for all members of the Institute with an interest in navigation, positioning, geodesy and time transfer using satellite navigation systems. As society's use of satellite navigation technology has evolved though, the original aims of the SNUG were transferred to other groups.
However, space remains one of the most exciting areas of research in terms of navigation - from efforts to explore further afield in our solar system to the development and application of systems like GPS, Galileo and other satellite systems.
