Road Traffic Optimisation workshop held in Croatia

CroatiaAnother successful RIN Croatian Branch workshop has been held in Zagreb, Croatia on 27 February 2008. Entitled Road Traffic Optimisation Through Road Use Charging RIN Workshop, it was jointly organised by the RIN Croatian Branch, the Faculty of Traffic and Transportation Sciences, University of Zagreb, and the Institute of Transportation and Communications, Zagreb.

Two RIN members Mr Graeme Griffiths (RIN Land Navigation SIG) and Nigel Wall (Location & Timing KTN) presents the latest issues in regard to principles of road use charging, policy and technology options; performance of GNSS – vulnerabilities; and planning for future – ideas for collaborative R&D. Marko Ševrovi? and Krešimir Vidovi? (two young researchers at the Institute of Transportation and Communications, Zagreb, Croatia) presented the results of their analysis of disadvantages of the current model of road charging in Croatia, proposals for its improvements, the influence of unnecessary conflicts of vehicle flows in traffic networks and software solutions for optimisation. The RIN and the RIN Croatian Branch activities have also been presented.

The large auditorium of more than 90 participants represented the governments of Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, local authorities (City of Zagreb), motorway operators, Croatian Automobile Club, system manufacturers and integrators, developers, engineers and media.

Croatian national television HTV covered the event, along with numerous daily papers and weekly technology-related magazines.

Croatia experiences a growing road traffic congestion, especially in large (Zagreb, Rijeka, Split) and mid-range (Koprivnica, Virovitica, ...) cities, and on motorways during summer season. Discussions and idea exchange that took place during this workshop will definitely help in solution of the problem well known worldwide. Additionally, professional contacts established during workshop are expected to lead to more collaboration with British and Croatian companies and research organisation.
