Android expands GNSS capabilities

A new Android software release expands GNSS analysis tool capabilities.

At last week's International Navigation Conference (INC) in Brighton, Google's Android Location Lead, Frank van Diggelen, announced the release of GNSS Analysis app v2.5.0.0 - with advanced processing and analysis tools for raw GNSS measurements retrieved from Android devices. The tools should enable device manufacturers to see in detail how well GNSS receivers are working - hence leading to improved design and GNSS performance of the devices.

It seems that the topic of most interest was carrier-phase from phones, which is available through the Accumulated Delta Range (ADR) field in the raw measurements. Apps are appearing on the apps store to take advantage of these raw measurements - giving enhanced accuracy through precise point positioning (PPP) and real-time kinematic (RTK) techniques.

The INC workshop demonstrated how data collected earlier in the day on Brighton’s sea front could be analyzed using the new release - with an example of how combined ionosphere and troposphere delays could be calculated using these GNSS Analysis tools, based on raw data logged that morning.

Papers on all presentations given at the INC will be released shortly. Details of this presentation may be found at the GPS World link below . .
