Watch the meteor shower

The annual, week-long Eta Aquarid meteor shower is predicted to reach its maximum on 6 May.

The bright moon - a few days past first quarter - will leave only about an hour of reasonably dark sky for early morning observations of the shower before dawn.

In low northerly latitudes, a dozen or more meteors per hour might be seen from the Eta Aquarid swarm, but observers from mid-northern latitudes may only see about half as many.

The meteor shower comes from Halley's Comet. The material that it releases on its way towards the Sun produces the October Orionids, while the material that is released after the comet has rounded the Sun and is heading back to the outer limits of the solar system produces these Eta Aquarids.
