Driving test to include satnav

Following directions from a satnav is to become part of the UK vehicle driving test.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has confirmed that the driving test in England, Scotland and Wales will change from 4 December 2017. The Agency explains that the changes are designed to ensure that new drivers have the skills they will need to help them through a lifetime of safe driving.

Two changes will be made:
- the 'independent driving' part of the test will increase to 20 minutes; this currently lasts around 10 minutes. During this part, the student has to drive without turn-by-turn directions from the examiner.
- most students will also have to follow directions from a satnav.

The examiner will provide the satnav and set it up. The student will not need to set the route - the examiner will do this; indeed, the student may not follow directions from their own satnav during the test. The student will be able to ask the examiner for confirmation of where they are going - and It will not matter if they go the wrong way, unless they make a fault while doing so.

But 1-in-5 driving tests will not use a satnav - the student will need to follow traffic signs instead. And, initially, the amended test will apply only to cars - not to goods vehicles.
