Bill Sandford

We are very sad to report the death of William H Sandford FRIN on 15 March in his 90th year.

Bill was a radar mechanic in the Royal Navy from 1945 to 1947 and then worked for a short time as a television engineer before joining the Bank of England for around 30 years. He was also employed by the IMF Third World Central Bank, finishing as Acting Governor, and was Advisor to Uganda on Currency Reform in 1987.

He had been a yacht and dinghy sailor since 1954 and became a RYA navigation shore-based instructor from 1984, developing an electronic navigation course from 1988.

Bill joined the Institute in 1985 and became a Fellow in 1994. He quickly became active within the Small Craft Group, becoming its Secretary in 1992 and Chairman 1994-95; this latter role saw him on the Technical Committee and he went on to become its Chairman, giving him a leading role on the Institute's Council. He rose to become Institute Senior Vice-President in 2005 but never lost sight of the fundamentals of sailing, remaing on the Technical Committee into this decade. He was a prime mover in spreading the Institute's wise words to the boating community, and led efforts to ensure a presence at the London and Southampton Boat Shows amongst others.

He had suffered a stroke around a year ago and had not been in good health since, ultimately succumbing to pneumonia.

Bill's Funeral will be at 1315 on 6 April at Randalls Park Crematorium, Leatherhead, KT22 0AG, followed by a Reception at Woodlands Park Hotel, Stoke D’Abernon, KT11 3QB. Institute colleagues are welcome, but it is requested that there should be no black ties or sombre clothing; RIN ties would be particularly welcome. Please let the Institute (,uk) know if intending to be there. Donations should be made to one's own favourite charity.

We will miss Bill very much and pass our condolences to his wife Sandra and children Elizabeth and Richard.
