A talk by O J Simmonds MEng MSc CEng CMarEng MIMarEST GE Power Conversion, and subsequent debate.
Arc Flash, and the problems it causes, is an inescapable consequence of the transmission and utilisation of electricity, and it is an issue across all fields of industry wherever high power electricity is utilised. However, the marine context exacerbates this problem due both to the hazard it presents to personnel, through their inescapable close proximity to distribution systems, and because of the impact it can have on equipment and operations. This presentation reviews the consequences of arc flash, quantifies the hazard, and discusses the possible control measures that can be applied to manage the hazard.
