OS launches GeoVation Challenge

Institute Corporate Member Ordnance Survey is seeking transport ideas for £25,000 innovation awards.

Budding innovators and entrepreneurs are being asked for ideas that could revolutionise transportation in UK - with a £25,000 prize fund available to help develop the best entries.

The GeoVation Challenge - run by OS - is seeking ideas on how the use of geographic data could make travel more environmentally sustainable and improve public transport services.

Since January, a range of datasets has been made available for free commercial reuse by public bodies, including a raft of central government information through - including route and timetable information from the DfT; mapping from the OS OpenData portal and data from local authorities, including Transport for London.

Possible competition ideas include simple, local solutions such as the use of geography to bring together potential lift-share partners - or ideas could be more technologically advanced, such as using GPS and digital map technology to enable a car to automatically accelerate and brake economically by using foreknowledge of the road layout.

As well as OS, the challenge is being supported by 'Ideas in Transit', 'Business in the Community' and the 'National Business Travel Network' (NBTN).

The GeoVation Challenge runs from 28 September to 26 November.
