Collision and oil spill in Singapore Straits
A Malaysian-registered tanker and St Vincents and Grenadines-registered bulk carrier have collided off Singapore.
The tanker MT Bunga Kelana 3 and bulk carrier MV Waily collided at 0603 local on 25 May.
The Singaporean Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) is coordinating the containment and clean-up efforts of the resultant oil spill. It says that the operator of the tanker had indicated that some 2,500 tons of crude oil could have spilled into the sea - but no injuries were reported.
By 1440 local, a Singapore Air Force helicopter had found an oil slick measuring 4 by 1 km located about 6 km S of Changi East.
Twenty Singaporean and Malaysian vessels with over 40 tons of non-toxic and bio-degradable oil spill dispersants, 1,500 m of containment booms and 2 skimmers are attempting to contain and disperse the slick.
