More GPS III satellites to be ordered

The US Government has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a second batch of GPS III satellites.

This Phase 2 acquisition is planned as a single fixed-price incentive-type contract, awarded via full and open competition, for production of 22 GPS III space vehicles (SV). The estimated value is $10 (~£7, €8) billion.

The RFP was released on 13 February, with a deadline for proposals in April. Construction is to begin in 2019 for delivery of the first satellite by 2026.

The Phase 1 contract was awarded in May 2016 as 3 fixed-price contracts to Boeing, Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin; this resulted in the building the first 10 GPS III SVs. The first GPS III satellite is due to be launched this year.

GPS III capabilities will include:
- better accuracy, claimed to be 3-times better than that of GPS II
- improved anti-jam, claimed as an 8-fold improvement
- stronger design, with better resilience and an operational life of 15 years - 25% longer than the latest GPS II SVs
- new L1C civil signal, giving compatibility with other GNSS transmissions
