A Sailing trip to South Georgia and the Falklands
Yachtsman Bill Rayner presented his sailing trip to the South Atlantic
Bill joined the yacht 'Elinka' in Ushuaia, After a sail through the Beagle Channel via a whale mausoleum, the 'Elinka' headed for the colder waters of the Falklands. Having toured East Falkland on the newly constructed road network, they then transited to South Georgia. The presentation covered history, geography, the whaling industry and the natural history of these fascinating island, including penguins, skuas, elephant seals and the now extinct imported reindeer. South Georgia is of course famous for Shackleton's landfall and overland crossing, and Bill's party followed in the later footsteps of this saga. The final leg of the voyage was sailing to the noise and bustle of Uruguay, a complete contrast to the previous weeks. Thanks to Bill for a very enjoyable and interesting presentation.
