Clipper70 yachts under way

All 12 Clipper70 yachts left the River Mersey at 1230 BST on 20 August for the 6,400 NM first leg of the Round the World Race.

The race is the brainchild of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston CBE FRIN - the first person to sail solo non-stop around the world; it is now on its eleventh run.

The Race is divided into 8 legs and 14-to-16 individual races, where competitors can choose to complete the full circumnavigation or select individual legs. It is the only race in the world where the organisers supply a fleet of 12 identical racing yachts, each with a fully-qualified skipper to safely guide this year's 247 crew members.

The first leg is 6,400 NM, through the Atlantic Ocean to Punta del Este, Uruguay. It will take ~35 days to complete and is the longest ever leg in the race’s history. The Race is expected to finish in Liverpool on 28 July 2018.
