Tuesday 8th May 2017 - Remotely Piloted Platforms

Our May event was held in the Geospatial Building, Triumph Road, Nottingham NG7 2TU on Tuesday 9th May. Former RAF Navigator Ian Thompson discussed to what extent the introduction of Remotely Piloted Platforms (Drones) by a nation’s armed forces can alter the existing Air Power Balance. Ian used the interesting analogy of the Football League to illustrate how countries might jump one or two leagues simply by introducing military drones to there repertoire. Then followed one of the longest and most thoughtful Q&A and discussion sessions we’ve had for some time. Tea, Coffee, and biscuits were served before the meeting as usual, and after the discussion East Midlands Chair Stephen Hogarth presented Ian, who is a student of military history, a copy of ‘Boom’, Russell Miller’s biography of MRAF Viscount Trenchard.
