The RIN SCG Visit to Trinity House, Harwich

The RIN SCG visit to Trinity House Harwich took place on Wednesday 5th April, 2017

The RIN SCG members were given a comprehensive overview of the history of the work of Trinity House, including its' maritime charities and Deep Sea Pilotage functions by Neil Jones, before the group visited the Planning Centre, which monitors the Trinity House Lighthouses, Light Vessels, DGPS and those buoys fitted with monitoring equipment. The Planning Centre, which operates 24/7, also takes over responsibility for monitoring Irish Lights and the Northern Lighthouse Board AtoNs outside of office hours.

After an informative time at the Planning Centre, the Group paid a visit to the Buoy Yard, where they were able to see close up examples of the Class 1- 4 buoy bodies, superstructures, tail tubes and moorings. Of particular interest, was one of the GRP buoys which had recently caught fire, as a result of a faulty regulator.

Following a hearty lunch at a local tavern, the group was privileged to spend an hour in the GLAs' Lights Laboratory, where they were given an insight into the unique work undertaken by the
GLAs's staff and shown various LED lights under test in the lab.
