On the Job Training - Submarining for real !

The Scottish Branch winter lectures completed with a double billing of RIN President James Taylor and RIN Director John Pottle

James entertained us with an account of his naval career, from Dartmouth to commanding submarines and beyond. We travelled from the Cold War to the Falklands, at fairly high speed, and then back again. We learnt that the key rules of navigating submarines have barely changed, the absolute importance of timing in underwater navigation, and the challenges of the famous 'Perisher' submarine command training.
John then discussed the future strategy of the RIN, its plans to be involved in key discussions, to attract younger membership, and to promote Chartered Navigation Engineer status. A discussion then ensued.
Our thanks to James and John for a fitting end to our winter programme.
