Sir Ernest Shackleton

East Midlands Chairman Steve Hogarth presents Chris Tarratt with photo albums from ‘The Heroic Age’ (JGP)

19 people attended our February event, which took place in The Geospatial Building, Nottingham. Local Member Chris Tarratt’s excellent talk entitled ‘Sir Ernest Shackleton’, was as much a description of what came to be called ‘the Heroic Age of Polar Exploration’ as of the life of Sir Ernest himself. Fridtjof Nansen, Roald Amundsen, and Robert Falcon Scott were all mentioned and their differing methods and styles of leadership discussed, as was their attitude to clothing, dogs, and combating scurvy. Tea, coffee and biscuits were served before the meeting as usual. After the talk, East Midlands Chairman presented Chris with albums of photographs from ‘the Heroic Age’ rescued from our local charity shops.
