GNSS/inertial chip introduced

Swiss company u-blox has introduced its 'Untethered Dead Reckoning' (UDR) technology, involving both GNSS and inertial sensors.

The company explains that its UDR technology, which provides continuous navigation without requiring speed information from the vehicle, brings the benefits of dead reckoning (DR) to installations previously restricted to using GNSS alone - significantly reducing the cost of installation for after-market DR applications.

It adds that the strength of UDR is particularly apparent under poor signal conditions, where it brings continuous positioning in urban environments - even to devices with antennas installed within the vehicle. Useful positioning performance is also available during complete signal loss, for example in garages and tunnels. With UDR, positioning starts as soon as power is applied to the module - before the first GNSS fix is available.

The NEO-M8U chip, which is form-replaceable with previous u-blox chips, has the following characteristics:
- 12.2 x 16 x 2.4 mm
- tracks GPS/GLONASS/BeiDou/Galileo (any 3 simultaneously)
- tracks all satellie-based augmentation systems (SBAS)
- 72 channels
- inboard accelerometer and gyroscope
- update rate up to 20 Hz
- quoted CEP 2m

The chip is claimed to be the first such civil GNSS/inertial unit available.
