Satnav leads driver into river

A Polish driver in Germany studiously followed his satnav off the end of a pier into the river Elbe.

It is said that Germans always do as they are told, but this time it was a visiting motorist from Poland who followed the instructions of his satnav - and drove straight into the river.

The satnav directed the male driver to take a ferry across the river Elbe, SE of Hamburg. But it seems that the driver didn’t realise that the ferry was at the other side of the river and the terminal was empty - and he simply drove off the end of the pier.

The 62-year-old driver and his 3 passengers managed to escape the rapidly sinking car and swim to the shore. They were taken to hospital to be checked for hypothermia from the icy water, but all were unhurt. Sadly, the Lancia car did not fare so well - it was recovered by a dredger and declared a write-off.

The driver told officers that he had simply believed his satnav and kept going. The Police explained: 'According to initial investigations, the driver trusted his satnav, which gave the Polish quarter an unpleasant surprise.'

In mitigation, the incident took place at 0500 local in pitch darkness and heavy rain on a remote road that has no street lighting. A local driver commented 'The only thing that prevented me doing the same thing was that the moon was shining and I was puzzled by the shimmer ahead. I drove very slowly and saw the road ended 2 metres in front of me. There was no way of seeing a ferry left from there in the dark.'
