The Life and Times of the Tirpitz

Jim summarises his many years of research

The Branch was lucky to obtain the services of Jim Shortland, noted local historian of 617 Sqn in WW2, to speak to us in May. Jim gave a talk entitled “The Life and Times of the Tirpitz” His talk covered all eight years of Tirpitz’s history from the laying down of her keel in1936 to her capsizing at the hands of IX and 617 Sqns in 1944. The talk included her short forays into the Atlantic in 1942 and 43 and her effective boxing-in in Norwegian fiords by the Royal Navy and the RAF for the remainder of the War.
