New radar beats wind farms

Thales has unveiled a new air traffic control (ATC) radar that claims to be unaffected by wind turbines or 4G phone networks.

The 'STAR NG' new generation ATC radar is for both military and civil use, being 'the most advanced and efficient radar surveillance system in the world'.

Thales explains that technological breakthroughs allow the radar to address some of the key challenges of the industry - most notably the system provides increased mitigation of wind farms, as well as reducing the impact on operational performance caused by the noise of 4G mobile phone networks. Wind farms can produce doppler-shifted returns on radars that mask wanted aircraft targets.

The radar can detect both slow and fast moving targets such as helicopters and fighters as well as very small targets such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) at ranges from 0.2 to 100 NM. It can also provide height information and possesses anti-jamming functions, and may be co-mounted with Thales or third-party secondary radar.

Such technology has become important in light of the proliferation of ever-taller wind turbines in ever-larger wind farms.

Thales concludes 'The development of STAR NG makes it unparalleled in the market. It has the most efficient detection range in the world for its power output as well as the best resolution and capacity to detect a target in a clutter environment.'
