OS maps on mobiles

A new free app enables smartphone users to transfer OS paper maps to their phones.

Starting with OS Explorer Outdoor Leisure 1:25,000 maps, purchasers of a paper map can also find it on their phone. With the same map detail, the mobile app is GPS-enabled, giving built-in route planning and recording.

To use the mobile download, one will need a fairly recent Apple iOS or Android smartphone or tablet. The app is free from app stores; a unique code found inside the purchased paper map enables it to be downloaded to the device.

As well as showing the map and current location, one can plan a route on screen for later use, follow an existing route or record a journey to analyse later. There is a built-in compass and a place-name search. The maps are available even when there is no mobile phone signal - making them ideal for use in remote areas.

The first set of maps with mobile download were released by Corporate Member Ordnance Survey on 10 June, covering National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in OS Explorer 1:25,000 scale. The remaining OS Explorer maps will be released later in 2015, with the Landranger 1:50,000 scale maps in 2016.

The new maps are available from bookshops and outdoor retailers, or can purchased directly from the OS Shop below . .
