Indoor navigation software award
Software for standard smartphones has won an award for indoor navigation requiring no special infrastructure.
The 2015 Microsoft Indoor Localisation Competition was held earlier this month in Seattle. There were 23 worldwide universities and companies developing indoor positioning for consumer, professional and industrial use competing in 2 categories - 'Infrastructure-free' and 'infrastructure-based' (using the likes of beacons). A building of ~2,500 sq m was used as the testing area by the Microsoft judges.
First infrastructure-free prize was awarded to a 10 kg backback connected to a 3D-camera with a 360º view.
But the first everyday-use award went to SPIRIT Navigation's infrastructure-free mobile indoor navigation software for standard smartphones - claiming to provide reliable 1-meter navigation in buildings, based on sensor fusion.
SPIRIT Navigation's software engine uses data from multiple smartphone sensors and does not require any infrastructure to be installed in the facility. Their 'Indoorspirit' product concurrently uses techniques including geomagnetic fingerprinting, pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR), WiFi fingerprinting and map-matching for heterogeneous data fusion.
Knowing its starting position as it enters a building, the indoor navigation engine claims to reliably detect real-time 3D indoor positioning - including floor level - in complex, dense and tall buildings with 1 m accuracy. The software can easily be integrated in LBS mobile applications for both Android and iOS devices.
Actual results showed 'Indoorspirit' to give an average error of 1.9 m. In a speech at the close of the contest, the Microsoft contest organiser commented that SPIRIT Navigation's indoor software precision and reliability 'were amazing'.
