RIN SCG Visit to The Historic Dockyard, Chatham

The RIN SCG visit to The Historic Dockyard Chatham took place on 7th April. SCG members and their guests enjoyed a very informative all day visit.

During the guided tour of The Ropery Small Craft Group members and their guests were press ganged into making a piece of Chatham rope, using machinery dating from the early 19th Century. After which, most members opted to stroll along the impressive ΒΌ mile long ropewalk, where rope is still made commercially today - a 1/2 mile round trip, as there are only two entrances and exits, both of which are towards the front of the building!

With attractions spread out over the 80 acre site, which included historic buildings, three historic Warships - HMS Cavalier, HMS Gannet and HMSm Ocelot, the Lifeboat Collection, the No. 1 Smithery, the Railway Workshop and more, some members decided a return visit was definitely required. There being too much to view in one day.

Look out for details of the next SCG visit which is being planned for later on in the year - information will be published under the SCG Events Section, once the details have been finalised.

In the meantime, we look forward to seeing members at other events we have lined up, including the Fly/Sail weekend in June, at Seawork, where we are sharing a stand with the Nautical Institute, and at the RIN Stand at the Southampton Boat Show.
