Driver survey for connected cars

A fascinating poll of drivers has revealed worries about current and future in-vehicle navigation systems.

The January survey by US company deCarta, although rather parochially covering just 150 drivers in the US, revealed some interesting worries.

Points arising included:
- only 21% use an in-car system; 37% use smart phones
- 23% download directions and read them off their phone or a paper printout
- 56% have safety concerns about managing multiple, non-integrated applications for local search, navigation and mapping
- 79% believe voice-activated mapping systems that allow drivers to keep their eyes on the road to be essential
- 69% consider dashboard screens that display videos and other Internet content to be dangerous
- 28% don't use their system because it either confuses or distracts them, or they simply don't know how to

deCarta's CEO explains:
'At deCarta, we have consistently stressed the need for automakers to deliver a new format for context-aware, real-time navigation systems in connected cars. Too often, users today are having to open up multiple yet non-integrated apps to get what they need for travel - which creates an unsafe experience.'
