Branch Secretary’s Report

The 2013/14 season has been a particularly busy one for the RIN in the Solent region and by the end of the season there will have been in all 18 events in the area at a variety of locations covering a wide range of topics, reflecting the RIN's interest in navigation at sea, on land and in the air. It is interesting to note that events have been held in no less than 12 different locations, we are grateful to all our hosts, in particular the Warsash Maritime Academy, NATs and the Hornet Services Sailing Club
We have continued to work with other organisations, in particular yacht clubs, The Nautical Institute and the UK Hydrographic Society and we plan to maintain these links into the future.
Useful links have been maintained with the joint Southern Branch of CILT and IMarEST which have resulted in interesting invitations to some their events. A more recent development is a link with the Society for Nautical Research South, which has resulted in invitations to attend some of their Saturday afternoon lectures at the RN& RAYC in Southsea.
Meetings at yacht clubs are an important feature of our programme and with two meetings at Hornet SC and one to come at the Royal Lymington Yacht Club.
Once again we took part in two exhibitions for young people held at the Southampton Cruise Terminal and the Southampton University. In total these exhibitions attract about 2200 youngsters and their teachers. Using interactive displays we demonstrate navigational techniques on land, at sea in the air. On the topic of young navigators, It is also pleasing to report the that Branch is maintaining active links with the Southampton University Royal Naval Unit who join us for our annual meeting at the Royal Lymington YC..
Visits are always popular. Our visit to the new RRS Discovery was perhaps the highlight event of the season The February meeting at NATS gave the opportunity for those taking part to see the operations room.
Committee member, Tim Thornton, does a great job looking after the Solent section of the RIN website and with e-mails, it is now our main means of local communication. We have ceased sending out regular newsletters by mail and now publish Solent News on the website every two months.
Our programme secretary, John Cairns and the local committee is working on the programme for next season commencing Sept 2014. With minor changes, it is likely to follow the pattern we have used in previous years. Details will be given in the RIN calendar, the August Solent Branch newsletter and on the RIN website. We are always pleased to receive suggestions for events.
