Thales signs EGNOS contract

Thales Alenia Space has entered a contract for EGNOS services worth over €120 million.

The company has announced the signature of the contract with Telespazio as part of a contract for the supply of the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) agreed between European Satellite Services Provider (ESSP) and Telespazio in July.

The overall contract covers EGNOS support and maintenance operations for 8 years, with Thales Alenia Space responsible for maintenance and minor upgrades - and integration of new EGNOS functions for aviation and maritime transport.

EGNOS was deployed in 2005 and has been operational in 'open service' since 2009. The system's 'Safety of Life' (SoL) service was declared operational in March 2011 to enable its use in aviation for precision approaches to airports, without requiring ground guidance systems.
