In-car nav satisfaction declining

US drivers' satisfaction with their vehicle's factory-installed navigation systems is on the decline.

A report from the US J D Power and Associates declares that satisfaction with factory-fitted satnavs has declined slightly from last year - possibly because systems are becoming more difficult to use or because more alternatives now exist.

Satisfaction in 2012 was rated as 68.1% - down from 69.4% in 2011. It declined in all factors measured, most notably in ease of use at 63.7% - down 2.5% on the year.

The study - now in its 14th year - identifies 6 factors that contribute to overall satisfaction with factory-installed navigation systems. In order of importance, they are:
- ease of use
- routing
- navigation display screen
- speed of system
- voice directions
- voice activation

Although many new-vehicle owners indicate that their factory-installed navigation system is better than their previous system, they are also frustrated with the complexity of menu systems, voice control commands and inputting destinations.

And, as smartphones become more capable, more owners prefer to use them for navigation instead of the system installed in their vehicle. In 2012, 47% of vehicle owners indicated that they used an app on their smartphone for navigation in their vehicle, compared with only 37% in 2011.

And 46% of owners indicated that they 'definitely or probably would not' repurchase a factory-installed navigation system if their smartphone navigation could be displayed on a central screen in their vehicle.

The 2012 'US Navigation Usage and Satisfaction Study' was based on responses from 20,704 vehicle owners. It can be downloaded from the link below . .
