New ship's inertial system

Northrop Grumman has introduced its MK 39 Mod 4A ring laser Ship's Inertial Navigation System (SINS).

The MK 39 Mod 4A Ring Laser SINS is the latest generation of the MK 39 family, based on ring laser gyro (RLG) technology.

The MK 39 Mod 4A offers several improvements over earlier versions, occupying half the deck space, with weight cut by 60%.

Setup and diagnostics are now done via a network-based application, and fully-configurable serial and Ethernet ports use NMEA 0183 standards - satisfying the needs of legacy systems and offering expansion potential for new clients.

A Windows-based control and display application allows the operator to observe the status of the navigator and all other devices, such as GPS and speed log, by connecting a computer to any location on the ship's network.

The user interface design claims to provide all of the data necessary to make navigation decisions in a single view.

Northrop Grumman - whose UK arm is an Institute Corporate Member - explains that separating sensor and navigation processing permits support of a wide variety of IMUs with different accuracy levels. This enables more upgrade potential for ships in a given fleet, even if they have different system requirements.

Further benefits claimed include low acquisition and life-cycle costs; high reliability and low maintenance - the RLG sensor offers a proven mean time between failure (MTBF) of over 200,000 hours.

Details from Northrop Grumman below.
