New website for Shipping Community
A new NATO Shipping Centre website gives more comprehensive and timely information on pirate activity.
On 16 August, the new, improved NATO Shipping Centre (NSC) website went live - providing better information about pirate activity around the Horn of Africa for the shipping community.
The NSC is based at the Allied Maritime Command HQ, Northwood, NW of London.
Northwood's Commander, Adm Sir Trevor Soar KCB OBE - a past Naval representative on the RIN Council - commented:
'Piracy is a serious threat for the shipping community and anything that can be done to deal with and overcome this issue is to be welcomed. The NSC has listened to their users and responded to their needs with a new, more interactive and relevant website demonstrating that NATO and the shipping community are working together to tackle the scourge of piracy.'
New products developed for the website include a fully scalable map covering the Gulf of Aden, Horn of Africa and Indian Ocean; this plots latest pirate attacks, allowing vessels to avoid pirate hot spots.
And easy-to-complete electronic forms will allow information processing to be quicker, especially for interactive surveys.
