UK road casualties down

The UK DfT has just published stats on road casualties for the year ending September 2010 - showing a downward trend.

Reported road casualties were down 3% and killed or seriously injured (KSI) down by 8%, compared with the 12-month period ending September 2009. The number of fatalities fell by 21% - to 1,900 - over the same period.

Casualties by category, compared with the 12-months ending September 2009, were:
- Pedestrians: -3% (KSI -8%)
- Motorcyclists: -8% (KSI -8%)
- Car users: -4% (KSI -11%)
- Pedal cyclists: +3% (KSI +2%)
- Children: -5% (KSI -5%)

Road traffic was 1.6% lower compared with the 12-month period ending September 2009.

For long-term trends, the 1994-98 average is used for comparison. Provisional estimates for the 12-month period to September 2010 compared with that period's averages indicate:
- Total casualties fell by 33% from 320,000 to 215,000
- 25,250 people were killed or seriously injured, 47% down
- 1,900 people were killed, also 47% down
- Child (aged 0-15) casualties fell by 55% - 2,580 were killed or seriously injured, down 62%
- The 159,000 accidents involving personal injury was 33% down; of these, 22,780 accidents involved death or serious injury - 44% down
