  • Daedalus Officer's Mess, RAF Cranwell, Sleaford, Lincs NG34 8HB

"Light the blue touch-paper!" Blue Steel in Rolls Royce Museum Derby (JGP)

For our March talk we move to Daedalus Officer’s Mess, RAF Cranwell for a joint lecture with the Cranwell Branch of the RAeS. Our speaker will be Past President Air Commodore Norman Bonnor who will discuss ‘Blue Steel” – The V Forces Stand-off Bomb’. Norman will explain how the increasing risk of over-flying Soviet targets
to release ballistic nuclear weapons led to the need for a stand-off capability, and will continue by describing the early design decisions and development of a suitable stand-off missile. Norman will also cover the contractor's and military trials at Aberporth and at Woomera in Australia; the modifications to the Victor and Vulcan for the missile's introduction to service use; how the navigators used the aircraft and
missile systems to prepare a Blue Steel for launch; the Post Acceptance
Launches by RAF crews in the mid 60s; its eventual demise with the
introduction of Polaris, and will finish with some myths and misconceptions
about the missile and its in-service use. The talk will start at 7.00 for 7.30PM. You will need to book for this event. Please contact emids@RIN.org.uk for further details and to reserve your place.
